April’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Maegan McLean from Yachats, OR. Maegan’s “one-of-a-kind dada-esque” pins definitely make people look twice!

”I have always loved doing collages. It’s a healing way of processing the many media messages that are constantly flung at my consciousness,” said Maegan. “Most of my buttons are made with pictures cut out from books, newspapers and magazines…they are then rearranged and glued onto a thin piece of paper inside of a penned circle. The circle is cut out and pressed with the basic 2-1/4” button clamp.”

Maegan does not sell her buttons. She gives them to friends who visit or mails them out to those who appreciate them.

As the Hot Button of the Month winner, Maegan received a $100 Badge-A-Minit gift certificate.

It's Better In The Bahamas Shirley Taylor of Shay's Button Magic in Nassau, The Bahamas, entered this button - which made us dream of sunny, lazy days on the beach! "This button depicts the sun setting on the beautiful sandy beaches of The Bahamas," said Shirley. "Making a close comparison, it is actually the Bahamian flag." The Bahamas celebrates it's independence six days after the U.S. Independence Day. Each year a variety of items are offered to commemorate the day. "This button was a hot seller, especially the keychains," Shirley said.

Great Day to be an Essex Trojan Essex High School students start each day hearing "It's A Great Day To Be An Essex Trojan!" Mr. Stuart, the school principal (now retired), started morning announcements with that phrase for more than 30 years. Kimberly Peterson, a teacher at the Essex, Iowa school, asked her students to design a seal with the school's mascot and the quote. The student council made buttons with the winning design for all employees. "Our school district had it's annual department of education site visit and every employee wore an Essex seal button," said Kimberly. "Employees continue to wear the buttons frequently during the school day, at sporting events and parent teacher conferences." The school plans to sell the buttons at registration next year.

Larned Indians Kimberly Leakey of Larned, KS, designed this button for her daughter to give to her classmates on her birthday. Because of food allergies, they try to think of things that aren't food. "They were a hit!" said Kimberly. "Her classmates were happy to get something school-related since items like that can be pretty expensive and hard to find. The buttons were also popular because I put the logo together myself instead of using a stock design that everyone had seen before. They were, by far, the most talked about item of the day."
