December’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Kimberly Leakey from Larned, KS. Kimberly made the "Silver Dollar City" buttons to give out as gifts at her family reunion held in Branson, MO. The buttons also provided a way to easily identify members of their group.

”I used the starter machine that makes 2 ¼” buttons and they were the perfect size,” Kimberly said. “The kids especially loved them. They looked forward to sticking them on their school bags when they got home..”

Other family member plan to stick them button on the fridge with a magnet, Kimberly noted.

“The unique Silver Dollar City bag design as the backdrop to this year’s 50th year logo got us a lot of attention from staff and guests wanting to know where we picked them up. You know your button is hot when the employees want them!” said Kimberly.

As the Hot Button of the Month winner, Kimberly received a $100 Badge-A-Minit gift certificate.

November’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Ashley Weaber from Lebanon, PA. Ashley creates her "Support Our Heroes" button ornaments to remind others of the sacrifices our troops make for us during the holiday season and of the challenges they face. Ashley faces challenges of her own – she has cerebral palsy and is legally blind – so her mom helps her with her button-making projects.

”I first heard about badge making when I was in the hospital after having a shunt operation on my head,” Ashley said. “I loved it so much I asked for a machine to make them! I love to just make them and give them to people to show them I care and love them.”

Ashley says she receives great responses from the people who receive her buttons and ornaments. “Some told me that they will put the ornaments on their tree each year to help them keep the heroes in their thoughts.”

September’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Lurae Benzio from Daisy Dots Creations in Industry, PA. Lurae’s "I’ll Create It" button showcases exactly what buttons are meant to do – get people’s attention! Lurae recently started her own business making jewelry, décor, favors, programs, buttons and other personalized items.

“I wear my button when I go out to run errands, shop or attend my children’s sporting events,” said Lurae. “When someone asks me about it, I hand them my business card and explain my services. This is the way that I get the attention of potential customers. Plus, the button saves me money because I am not randomly handing out business cards to people who may not be interested. And it helps to start a conversation about what I love to do best….CREATE!”

August’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Angela Hughes from Cherry Limeaid Doujinshi in St. George, UT. Angela’s "Dude, that fish looks upset" button was created “to raise awareness that fish do not belong in shoes, lava lamps, or any of those crazy places people thought it would be cool to put them back in the 60s-70s.

“I made the button just to have fun and make people laugh,” said Angela. “It amused quite a few people…so goal accomplished!”

July’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Krista Steen from Kooties, Ink in Cloquet, MN. Krista’s "Straight to State" button was used to recognize the girl's softball team that qualified for the state tournament! Parents were given these buttons with their player's name and number on them. “We made the buttons in our school colors,” said Krista. “They were a big hit – parents loved them!”

In fact, the buttons were such a big hit that the team is planning on using buttons for a fundraiser next year!

June’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Michael Schafer from KYOU FOX-15 and Operation Gratitude in Ottumwa, IA. Michael’s "I Thanked A Soldier - Operation Gratitude" button was designed to encourage people to send letters to thank American soldiers in hostile areas - and potentially win a prize. “The buttons provided an instant reward and incentive for people to participate in Operation Gratitude,” said Michael. “Our TV station teamed up with a local recreational vehicle vendor on this project - and one lucky letter writer won a $5400 4-wheel ATV.”

KYOU FOX-15 began promotion of Operation Gratitude and distribution of the buttons during a big town event – and gave out more than 120 buttons to people who agreed to write letters to thank American soldiers overseas for putting their lives on the line for all of us!

May’s Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Kacey Shoemake from Bespeckled Designs in Saint Peters, MO. Kacey is an illustration and graphic design student and has started using buttons and badges as a way to promote her art. “Video games, comic books, and music are all huge sources of inspiration for me,” said Kacey. “For this design, ‘Kirin the Monster Hunter,’ I’ve re-created a fairly serious video game character into a fun, lovable character to show the flexibility of my work.”

Kacey distributed the buttons during a big art portfolio event at her school – a great way to make her art stand out in the crowd!

March's Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Brenda Kleinjan from Pierre, SD. Raising awareness for the Kids Voting - South Dakota Group was the goal of these eye-catching buttons. "The buttons were used to promote a major fund-raiser for our group," said Brenda. "The goal was to raise awareness and in turn attendance at the (Liberty Ball) game."

Brenda utilized a variety of sizes of buttons to meet the objectives. Three-inch buttons were used 6-8 weeks before the event. A generic event button was worn by committee members throughout the state. Individualized buttons were made for team coaches, volunteers and key leaders.

The 2-1/4" button was distributed to high school students who serve as legislative pages to wear as part of their uniform at the state capitol. One-inch buttons were sold for donation at the game.

Brenda was pleased with the results of the campaign - the Libery Ball Game raised a total of $6,000 for their group!

February's Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Helen Chung from Woodlynne, NJ. Helen's “The Dude Hates Cancer” buttons are being used to promote The Dude Hates Cancer 2010 charity bowling event in Philadelphia, which is scheduled to take place in August. "This will be the 5th annual event benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society," said Helen. "The specific purpose of this button is to get more participants and get people interested in signing up for the bowling and fundraising tournament."

The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $40,000. Helen is on the organizing committee for the event and decided to put her button maker to good use. Her fiancé created the designs, so she’ll be sharing her prize with him. As the Hot Button of the Month winner, Helen received a $100 Badge-A-Minit gift certificate.

January's Hot Button of the Month Contest Winner is…Alvin J. McRoyal, Jr. from A McRoyal Company in Las Vegas, NV. Alvin's “Evolution of a People” buttons were used to promote his newly started gift and novelty business. "My wife works with the System of Higher Education in Nevada and each month a different nationality is celebrated at that diverse institution," said Alvin. "Using buttons inthis manner is a unique way to acknowledge these occasions."

Alvin explains the meaning of each person pictured on the button:
  • Harriett Tubman was a former slave who helped some 300 other slaves escape before serving as a scout and spy for Union forces in South Carolina during the Civil War.
  • Frederick Douglass was an American abolitionist, women's suffragist, editor, orator and author in the 1800s.
  • Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Jamaica in 1914, and brought it to the United States two years later.
  • Rosa Parks is famous for standing up for Equal Rights in the Montgomery Bus Boycott - in 1955, this African-American woman refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white man and was arrested for violating the city's racial segregation ordinances that mandated that blacks sit in the back of public buses and give up their seats for white riders if the front seats were full.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. lead the March of Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.
  • Malcolm X, an influential leader of the NOI (Nation of Islam, replaced his surname with an X to signify his rejection of his "slave" name. He was shot to death in 1965.
  • In 1974, Shirley Chisholm became the first major party African-American and the first female candidate for United States President.
  • Colin Powell, as Chairman of United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, played an integral role in planning and executing the first Persian Gulf was under presdient George H.W. Bush. He was appointed Secretary of State in 2001.
  • Condoleezza Rice, succeeded Powell, becoming the first African-American woman to serve as Secretary of State.
  • Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States in 2009 - the nation's first black President.
